The clock was running backwards The kettle wouldn't boil I put my shoes on upside down And left them in the hall The paper said it was the fifth The calendar said nine The man next door was painting rain Across the washing line It wasn't Tuesday It wasn't then I looked at the clock And looked again It wasn't Tuesday It wasn't late I knocked on the door But I got there eight I waited at the station Beside a broken sign The train came in on Monday But the ticket said July A woman with a yellow hat Was counting up to four She said she'd seen me yesterday But I'd never been before It wasn't Tuesday It wasn't then I looked at the clock And looked again It wasn't Tuesday It wasn't late I knocked on the door But I got there eight The telephone was ringing But nobody was home I picked it up and heard myself Say, "Leave me here alone" I asked the man behind the desk If Friday had been by He said, "You'll have to ask the day" And winked his other eye Monday's in the cupboard Wednesday's on the stairs Thursday's got my jacket And Sunday isn't there I tried to write it down But all the words ran dry The page was full of numbers And a little yellow sky It wasn't Tuesday It wasn't then I looked at the clock And looked again It wasn't Tuesday It wasn't late I knocked on the door But I got there eight I woke up in the evening With the morning on my face The milkman left a postcard From some other time and place I asked him what day it was He said, "You'll have to see" Then handed me a little box That wasn't meant for me It wasn't Tuesday It wasn't then I looked at the clock And looked again It wasn't Tuesday It wasn't late I knocked on the door But I got there eight It wasn't Tuesday It wasn't right It wasn't morning It wasn't night It wasn't Tuesday Or so they say I'll try again Some other day Some other day Some other day It wasn't Tuesday Anyway...
