Clues They Gave Me
Time wasted like dollars in the lottery Betting numbers to win what can’t be won Searching for why the clues they gave me Were nothing more than bullets for their guns Those clues were not road maps to answers They were empty words we carry to our graves Without answers I have been one of the lazy ones Who never wrote words good enough to save This morning in a silent dim lit kitchen I scan the past sipping vodka in my cup Every faded picture of some ancient lover Viewed by hollow eyes that long ago gave up Those visions aren’t a canvas brushed with meaning Only sketches of the walls inside our caves Without meaning I have been one of the angry ones Who painted portraits of all that got betrayed The moment vision changes Pleasure looks the same as pain It’s a box filled with photos For those who spread the blame Our eyes will barely focus If the surgery ends rough When the mask is pulled away We swear we’ve seen enough Tomorrow is the stage of our last performance The final curtain drawn down on our stolen lines The closing act of one remembered scene We have rehearsed at least a thousand times Those scenes are not the memories of desire Only whispers of the sins we came to crave Without desire I have been one of the lucky ones Who abandoned hope in every role he played
