A Pot of Fools

A whisper rustles through the pines. A shadow slips from tree to tree. Old Sean stumbles, greets the pond, For all the gathered souls to see. A branch swings back and hits poor Liam. He stands there swayin' like a mule. In the dark, a golden glimmer ran— Grab the lantern and the sack, you fool! From autumn's start to April's end, We chase the gold around the bend. To the hunt, we're out tonight, With sack an' stick an' lantern light. It's like a curse, a wretched plight, Nothing ever goes quite right! We'll never catch the Little Man! So let's drink a pint while we can! A rustle 'neath the hawthorn bush; Colin's caught within the thorn. He crept along with a whispered "hush," Now his Sunday clothes are ripped and torn. A coat of gray slips through the grass. Get the sack an' be on your toes! But Finnian trips and falls on his face, And the sack has a hole where the treasure goes! A windin' path through brambles deep, Young Mick falls an' he spills his beer. A cold wind makes the bravest weep— The Leprechaun was never here! A sudden shout, a wild-goose chase, The lanterns fade, the crew is done. A flash of gold in a hidden place— He's sittin' there, just havin' fun! The night's near done, the whiskey dry, A giggle from a hole nearby. He laughs at us, so spry and sly. This hunt will make the bravest cry! To the hunt, we're out tonight, With sack an' stick an' lantern light. It's like a curse, a wretched plight, Nothing ever goes quite right! We'll never catch the Little Man! So let's drink a pint while we can!
