[Verse 1] My soldier wakes before the dawn With a letter folded in his hand A photograph from back at home The reason that he takes his stand Stay strong, stay true, he tells his heart Though every road is hard and long The weight may make his knees buckle But somehow he keeps standing strong [Pre-Chorus] Through the rain and blazing sun He carries every borrowed name For the ones who wait behind the door He walks straight into the flame [Chorus] Salute the soldier who stood for our lives Who stood for the country beneath these skies When bullets fly, he doesn't turn away He holds to his promise through every day Proud and true, with a heart made bold For the hands he loves and the ones he holds Raise your eyes when the colors rise Salute the soldier who stood for our lives [Verse 2] He hears his children's voices In the quiet between the rounds Sees his mother's kitchen table And the old familiar town A tired face beneath the helmet A steady breath behind the fear He keeps the names of home inside him And lets their love draw near [Pre-Chorus] Through the rain and blazing sun He carries every borrowed name For the ones who wait behind the door He walks straight into the flame [Chorus] Salute the soldier who stood for our lives Who stood for the country beneath these skies When bullets fly, he doesn't turn away He holds to his promise through every day Proud and true, with a heart made bold For the hands he loves and the ones he holds Raise your eyes when the colors rise Salute the soldier who stood for our lives [Bridge] If his knees should buckle, let the ground remember He rose again with the strength of December Not for glory, not for a name But for the ones who would never face the same [Final Chorus] Salute the soldier who stood for our lives Who stood for the country beneath these skies When bullets fly, he doesn't turn away He holds to his promise through every day Proud and true, with a heart made bold For the hands he loves and the ones he holds Raise your eyes when the colors rise Salute the soldier who stood for our lives [Outro] Stay strong, stay true We stand because of you Salute the soldier Who stood for our lives
