Written Prayers II

[Intro — spoken, whispered] I found your journal. I wasn't supposed to read it. But I did. And somewhere between the things you couldn't say to me and the things you couldn't say out loud, I found you. [Verse 1] You'd sit behind a closed door, phone lighting up your face, and I'd tell myself you're angry, when maybe you were afraid. I'd knock and hear the silence, you'd text instead of speak, and I'd wonder why my daughter kept disappearing from me. I called it stubborn. Called it attitude. Called it teenage armor, like mothers sometimes do. But then I found the pages that you never meant to share, and every word you couldn't tell me was waiting for me there. You wrote down what was hurting. You wrote down what you feared. You wrote prayers to a God who somehow heard you when I didn't hear. [Pre-Chorus] And God, I wish I'd known. I wish I'd seen behind the anger. I wish I'd understood that sometimes “leave me alone” means— “Please don't leave me alone.” [Chorus] Written prayers, ink between the lines. Little pieces of your heart you couldn't say with mine. I thought you were pushing me away, but you were reaching through the dark. I was trying to raise a daughter— You were trying to save your heart. Written prayers, I read what you couldn't say. And I wish I could go backward just to hold you on those days. I can't rewrite the pages. I can't undo the years. But if you ever read this— I'm still here. [Verse 2] I know I wasn't perfect. I know I missed some signs. I thought being your mother meant knowing when you're fine. But motherhood's a strange thing— you can memorize a face and still not recognize the sadness hiding in its shape. You carried things from childhood I thought we'd left behind. You built yourself a fortress and I kept asking why. Maybe you didn't need a lecture. Maybe you didn't need advice. Maybe you needed someone to sit beside you in the night. And I know there are things you'll have to face without me. There are wounds I cannot heal just by loving you completely. But I'll never stop believing there's a road beneath your feet. And I'll walk beside you until you don't need me. [Chorus] Written prayers, ink between the lines. [Bridge — piano, almost no beat] Maybe someday you'll forgive me for the things I couldn't see. Maybe someday you'll understand I was learning motherhood while you were learning how to be. And maybe God was in those pages long before I found them there. Maybe every whispered prayer was proof you weren't alone. Maybe He was holding you when I couldn't reach your hand. Maybe He was teaching me that love isn't always fixing— Sometimes love is staying. [Beat returns — restrained] So write it down. Write every fear. Write every question. Write every tear. You don't have to make it pretty. You don't have to make it make sense. You don't have to hide the pieces that you think will disappoint me. If you can't say it, write it. If you can't write it, cry it. If you can't cry it, just sit beside me. You don't have to perform being okay anymore. [Final Chorus — sung, expansive] Written prayers, now I know your voice. Not the one you use with everybody— The one underneath the noise. And I can't erase the pages. I can't change what brought you here. But I can love the girl who wrote them. I can stay. Written prayers, God, let her know tonight: She was never too broken. She was never too difficult. She was never too far gone. And if she can't believe it yet, I'll believe it for her until she can. [Outro — spoken] I found your journal. I found your prayers. And somewhere in those pages, I found my daughter again.
