The Unnamed - Episode 9 - The Right Question
[intro - strings from episode 8 return alone first, no electronics yet, fragile and exposed] [verse 1 - male vocal, sung, slower than anything before, careful] I've been asking the wrong things since the first wall, since the wrist since the corridor, since the light since all of it I asked what I did I asked what it cost I asked how to leave I asked what I lost but standing here with her in the only quiet this place has I finally hear the question I've been walking past [pre-chorus - strings tighten, a single electronic tone, creeps in from far away] not what not how not when just - [chorus - strings and electronics reunite, fuller than episode 8, but held back, saving something for the end] who are you three words I never said out loud who are you standing in my walls knowing all my corridors by heart who are you tired in a way that doesn't come from being here once who are you [verse 2 - she answers, same vocal or second voice, quiet, no drama, just the truth finally arriving] she says - "I was on the third floor of a building that relied on something that relied on something that relied on a question mark" "I didn't make it to the fourth" no anger in it no accusation just a fact the way facts sound when they've been carried a very long time [pre-chorus - electronics rise slowly, the two elements building toward something] she says - "I didn't come here to find you I came here because I couldn't let it go either we build the same walls you and I just from different sides" [chorus - fuller, something breaking open in the vocal] who are you three words I never said out loud who are you standing in my walls knowing all my corridors by heart who are you tired in a way that doesn't come from being here once who are you [bridge - everything drops, just voice, dry, no reverb, the most exposed moment in the entire story] she pulls back her sleeve I look at her wrist nothing there just skin just the faint outline of something that used to be she says - "I forgot mine a long time ago that's when I knew I was almost out" almost I look at mine still there every letter every curve every lean of the E and for the first time I notice the handwriting [outro - strings return alone, slow, something resolving but not yet resolved] she doesn't have to say it I already know I wrote it I always write it for the next one who arrives here not knowing anything the ingenieur is watching from the doorway he nods once like he's seen this moment before and this time it looks different [spoken tag - the quietest of the entire series, almost a whisper] he knows now. all of it. what he did. who she was. what the wrist means. what he has to do next. there are no more doors. just one last corridor. and what he decides to do at the end of it. episode 10. the finale. only here [end - one string note, long, slow fade, then absolute silence]
