[Verse 1] They laid the flowers down in a borrowed moon Painted all the sorrow in a velvet room Two lovers sleeping where the footlights bleed Everybody holding the breath they rehearsed to keep [Pre-Chorus] Then the curtain forgot what it came here to prove A small soft shadow crossed the funeral blue [Chorus] The cat walked through the tragedy Tail held high like a match in the rain Life put its paws on the balcony And the whole house broke from the beautiful pain Oh, the script said die, die properly But the night said no so casually The cat walked through the tragedy And nobody died the same [Verse 2] Juliet froze with a smile in her sleeve Romeo tried not to laugh when he tried not to breathe All those old ghosts in their perfect lines Had to make room for a creature with unruly eyes [Bridge] Maybe mercy is not a speech Maybe grace has whiskers and dirty feet Maybe heaven slips past security To ruin the ending we thought we need [Final Chorus] The cat walked through the tragedy Tail held high like a match in the rain Life put its paws on the balcony And the whole house broke from the beautiful pain Oh, the script said die, die properly But the night said no so casually The cat walked through the tragedy And nobody died the same
