Having left a bad past behind him, he is now taking his life into his own hands. He works at a tattoo parlor and is earning things that belong to him for the very first time. He believes he has his life under control—unaware of the things lurking out there in the darkness. — The first song in a series intended to grow alongside the role-playing campaign. [Intro] Twenty years, not much time for this much weight, learned early, when nobody stays, you find your own way. No clean start, no spare route tucked away, but I'm still here. Guess it wasn't quite enough to put me down. [Verse 1] Watched doors close behind me more times than I can count, borrowed rooms, borrowed names, strangers laying rules out. Always heard, “It gets better.” Yeah, sometime, maybe. But “sometime” doesn't pay the rent or sit with you at three. Learned to fit my whole damn life inside a single bag, quit asking who'd still be around by the end of next month. Expect nothing, hurts less. That's what I used to think. You ask me now why trust comes hard? Couldn't tell you. Maybe I notice too much. I remember every word, every glance, every dodge, every “I'm not going anywhere” right before they were gone. My head doesn't delete shit, it files every scrap, then drags the folders out at night and stacks them by the bed. But I'm not whatever happened to me back then, not a case number, not the kid somebody wrote off in pen. Maybe all I inherited was a lousy hand to start with, but fuck it, my legs still work. I'm not standing here waiting. [Hook] My life is mine, down to the last damn inch. Every mark, every screw-up, every night I got through left something under the skin. My life is mine, you can talk, I'm still moving. I've spent time down on the floor, so your idea of deep doesn't scare me much. If I drop, I get up. If I'm bleeding, I keep going. I don't need somebody saving me. Just a reason and enough nerve to move. [Verse 2] Got a flat that's way too small, but I lock my own door, nobody walks in just because they think they're allowed anymore. Old table, busted speakers, tools beside the bed, half a dozen things in pieces 'cause throwing stuff out pisses me off. Maybe 'cause I know the feeling more than I'd admit, somebody sees a broken thing and decides that's all it is. Give me time, give me tools, let me work the problem through, I've had worse-looking wrecks than this running almost good as new. Black clothes, black coffee, nowhere near enough sleep, on the bike my head shuts up when the engine starts to speak. Open it up, city smears, asphalt filling up my sight, hundred things inside my skull, then for once there's only now. Studio smells like ink, coffee, skin and disinfectant, first lines on somebody else's body, somebody says, “You've got it.” Nobody asks where I came from, nobody pats me on the head. If the work is shit, it's shit. If it's good, that's what gets said. That's what I need. Don't mourn a past that wasn't yours. Tell me what I got wrong, then give me room to do it better. [Verse 3] Yeah, I do stupid shit while knowing better in advance, see five clues, build the answer, walk straight into the mess. Too proud for “Could you help me?”, too much head for “Let it go”, tell me “That's none of your business” and you've practically said go. I read people pretty well until I think I've read the book, miss the page between the chapters, pay for where I never looked. I'm not bulletproof, I know it, I just sometimes act that way, 'cause letting someone close means showing where the pressure stays. No. I'm not handing anybody that for free. [Final Hook] My life is mine, down to the last damn inch. Every mark, every screw-up, every night didn't make me better, it just taught me what sticks. My life is mine, and I'm not signing it away. Not to a home, not to some asshole, not to anyone deciding what I'm allowed to be. If I drop, I get up, not because it sounds good, because there's work to do. And maybe all this fucking wreckage will eventually turn into something useful.
