[Intro] [Instrumental builds slowly] [Soft Male Vocals] There's a shadow by the streetlight In black and white beneath his hat He tips it like a gentleman Then disappears just like that [Verse 1] You saw him standing by the doorway Dressed in black and white from head to toe He raised his hand and waved politely Like an old friend saying hello You tried to ask him who he was But he never made a sound He only tilted up his head And slowly looked around [Pre-Chorus] He doesn't need to speak You know what that smile means One little gesture And nothing's what it seems [Male Group Harmonies] No words No warning No sound [Chorus] He never says a word But everybody knows The way he tilts his head The way that smile just grows He waves like an old friend Then watches someone run The quietest clown in town Is having so much fun He never says a word He doesn't have to try You can see it in his eyes When he watches people cry [Verse 2] He found an empty room upstairs And pulled the curtains closed He set a little table And carefully arranged his tools He straightened up his jacket Then pointed to the chair And when the victim wouldn't sit He simply waited there [Pre-Chorus] He doesn't need to speak You know what that smile means One little gesture And nothing's what it seems [Male Group Harmonies] No words No warning No sound [Chorus] He never says a word But everybody knows The way he tilts his head The way that smile just grows He waves like an old friend Then watches someone run The quietest clown in town Is having so much fun He never says a word He doesn't have to try You can see it in his eyes When he watches people cry [Instrumental Break] [Verse 3] A little knock came from the hallway Then the room went quiet Someone tried the door behind him But he wouldn't let them by He disappeared around the corner With that smile still on his face Then came a sudden crash From somewhere in the place [Male Group Harmony] Somewhere in the place [Verse 4] A few minutes later He came walking down the hall He straightened up his little hat And gave a cheerful wave There was something on his sleeve That he carefully brushed away Then he pointed down the hallway Like he wanted them to stay [Pre-Chorus] He doesn't need to speak You know what that smile means One little gesture And nothing's what it seems [Male Group Harmonies] No words No warning No sound [Chorus] He never says a word But everybody knows The way he tilts his head The way that smile just grows He waves like an old friend Then watches someone run The quietest clown in town Is having so much fun He never says a word He doesn't have to try You can see it in his eyes When he watches people cry [Bridge] You think the room is empty You think the nightmare's done You make it to the doorway You think that you've outrun him Then slowly from the darkness Comes a little wave goodbye He points toward the empty chair And smiles with shining eyes [Male Group Harmonies] No words No words [Breakdown] [Music drops almost completely] [Male Lead] He raises one finger And puts it to his lips He shakes his head slowly Then smiles [Male Group Whisper] No sound [Male Lead] He taps upon the window He waves from underneath Then when you look away He's gone [Male Group Whisper] He's gone [Male Lead] But you hear the footsteps Coming back again [Male Group Harmonies] Coming back again [Final Chorus] He never says a word But everybody knows The way he tilts his head The way that smile just grows He waves like an old friend Then watches someone run The quietest clown in town Is having so much fun He never says a word He doesn't have to try You can see it in his eyes When he watches people cry [Male Group Harmonies] No words No warning No sound [Male Lead] He never says a word But somehow you understand [Male Group Harmonies] You understand [Male Lead] The clown is waiting With a smile on his face [Final Chorus] He never says a word But everybody knows The way he tilts his head The way that smile just grows He waves like an old friend Then watches someone run The quietest clown in town Is having so much fun [Outro] [Instrumental slowly fades] [Male Lead] He tips his hat beneath the streetlight Then disappears into the dark [Male Group Harmonies] Into the dark [Male Lead] No words...
