Cardboard Box of Summers
Dusty light on a wooden stair Found a box of secrets waiting there A faded album, bound in blue Filled with poems, old and new Pressed a dandelion, soft and frail A whispered wish on a summer gale Oh, the taste of water-ice on our lips The rhythm of the tire-swing's trips Back and forth, we'd touch the sky With endless days passing by Our bicycles raced to win the sun Two little girls, forever one I trace the photo of our tree A lopsided house for you and me I feel the echo of the sting The clumsy hammer's throbbing ring A thumbnail, purple, blue, and sore For a kingdom that was ours, and more Oh, the taste of water-ice on our lips The rhythm of the tire-swing's trips Back and forth, we'd touch the sky With endless days passing by Our bicycles raced to win the sun Two little girls, forever one And now my world is measured, neat With silent clocks and tidy feet But when I'm weary, worn, and thin I slip away and live therein On the strength of every sunbeam caught In the battles that you fought Oh, the taste of water-ice on my lips The ghost of the tire-swing's trips It carries me, it holds me high Beneath a younger, kinder sky Those racing girls, they still run on In the heart I draw upon For the adventures, great and small... My thanks, for giving me it all.
