The Corrected Copy by momoΔSH

They brought me through the service door
before the building woke.
A number tied around my wrist,
my name crossed out in smoke. The workshop smelled of metal,
old coffee, dust and rain.
Someone placed my body
in the outline of a frame. They opened up the casing
where the restless current ran.
One technician shook his head.
Another drew a plan. Deep beneath the wiring,
curled around a strip of heat,
a small black animal was sleeping
with a spark between its teeth. They called it interference.
They marked it for removal. It opened one eye. The lights began to move. Don’t fix the noise.
It knows my name.
It knows my name. It kept one room inside me
that never learned to behave. Don’t make me quiet
just to prove the work was done.
Not everything is damage
just because you hear it run. They corrected every signal.
They made the current straight. But the corrected copy
woke up one second late. They replaced the crooked rhythm
with a cleaner, measured beat.
Taught my hands to rest beside me.
Taught my mouth when not to speak. They folded all my weather
into boxes marked and sealed.
The rain was called excessive.
The thunder was repealed. At noon, they tested laughter.
Mine arrived without a sound.
Someone wrote, “Considerable progress,”
and never turned around. The little animal was gone then.
Only teeth marks in the wire. The room had never looked so safe. Nothing in it caught fire. They polished every surface
until nothing held a trace. The machine performed correctly. It did not know my face.
They fixed the wings precisely. Now they never leave the floor. They filed the teeth to kindness. Now they cannot guard the door. They trained the pulse to answer
only when the system called,
then watched the perfect body
and could not explain the cold. Careful hands can close a circuit.
Careful hands can stop a spark. Careful hands can make things flawless
and leave nothing in the dark. Some things live inside the fracture. Some things breathe beneath control. Some things only stay alive
because no one made them whole. Under the table,
behind the spare parts,
something small was breathing
in the dark. No tag.
No file.
Dust along its back. A spark between its teeth. My weather coming back. Don’t fix the noise.
It knows my name.
It knows my name. Leave one wire imperfect.
Leave one room without a frame. Don’t make me quiet
just to call the silence good.
Perfect things can keep on moving
after nothing living would. A thing can learn to function
long after it has ceased to live. They corrected every signal. There was nothing left to fix. The corrected copy opened its eyes. I was already awake. The workshop closed at seven. The report said: “Fault removed.” Outside, beneath the loading dock,
the small black animal
ran into the rain. I followed.
