[Verse 1] It snowed and snowed across the earth To every limit. A candle burned upon the table, A candle burned. [Verse 2] As midges in the summer swarm To fly to flame, Flakes from the yard swarmed to the pane In crowded frame. [Verse 3] The blizzard moulded on the glass Circles and arrows. A candle burned upon the table, A candle burned. [Chorus] A candle burned upon the table, A candle burned. [Verse 4] On the illumined ceiling lay Shadows that quivered: Crossings of arms, crossings of legs, Crossings of fate. [Verse 5] And two small shoes fell to the floor With a sharp clack. And wax tears from the night-light dripped Upon her dress. [Verse 6] And everything was lost in gloom Of snowy white. A candle burned upon the table, A candle burned. [Bridge] A draught blew from the corner on the candle, And heat of temptation Raised like an angel two wings In cruciform fashion. [Verse 7] It snowed the whole of February, And time and again A candle burned upon the table, A candle burned.
