At the Gates of Nain

+ Show full styles

[Verse 1] The gates of Nain swung open to a slow and mournful line The widow walked in front, her face with tears that shine Her only son lay still upon the simple wooden bier We followed close behind, our hearts weighed down with fear [Verse 2] I looked upon the widow, her strength already thin How will she feed herself when night and need set in? He was a friend to me, a brother through the years Now all that’s left are memories and the sound of falling tears… the sound of falling tears [Verse 3] We met them at the gate, a crowd with Jesus near He stopped and saw the widow through her falling tears His gaze fell on the bier where my friend lay so still The air grew thick with silence as He stood against the chill [Verse 4] He walked up to the bier and touched the wood with care Then gently told the widow, “Don’t cry, don’t despair” He spoke with quiet power in a voice both strong and kind “Young man, I say to you, get up” and life returned in time… life returned in time [Verse 5] The young man sat up straight and started in to speak A gasp ran through the crowd, our legs grew weak We stared in pure amazement at the life that had returned The widow’s tears of sorrow into tears of joy had turned [Verse 6] A holy fear came over us, we praised the living God “A great prophet has appeared!” the people cried aloud “God has come to help His people!” echoed down the road I walked home changed forever by the power He had showed… by the power He had showed... By the power.... He had showed...
