[Verse 1] At first light on the red dirt plain They came like prayer through the iron rain Man on the fence and the dust in his eyes But the brumby kept the old sky Mares and foals in the open scrub Strong as the wind and fierce with love Hooves on the ground like a rolling drum Running where the wild rivers come [Pre-Chorus] Who gave them the miles? Who gave them the breath? Who wrote their names In the book of the west? [Chorus] Run free, brumby, run free God made the gate, then He gave you the key Run free, brumby, run free Over the ranges, under the trees Run free, brumby, run free (run free) You were born for the open, born to be [Verse 2] Through saltbush heat and the iron bark They move like fire from spark to spark No chain of shame, no borrowed road Just the old earth bearing their load And I stand small where the grass bends down Hear that mercy in a hoofbeat sound If creation sings, then let it be known Even the wild can find a home [Pre-Chorus] Who gave them the miles? Who gave them the breath? Who held that spirit Beyond our fence? [Chorus] Run free, brumby, run free God made the gate, then He gave you the key Run free, brumby, run free Over the ranges, under the trees Run free, brumby, run free (run free) You were born for the open, born to be [Bridge] Let the thunder roll, let the old winds call Let the moonlight lay on the mountain wall If the Maker marked them with a living fire Who are we to hush that choir? [Final Chorus] Run free, brumby, run free God made the gate, then He gave you the key Run free, brumby, run free Over the ranges, under the trees Run free, brumby, run free (run free) You were born for the open, born to be Run free, brumby, run free In the heart of the wild, let mercy speak
