[Verse] It was Christmas in the Commons The snow was falling fast They sang about the future While clinging to the past The Hill was draped in silence The bells began to ring And from the frozen river I heard the city sing [Prechorus] Oh Bill C-15 They say you’re clean But we’ve read between the lines A law that bends for power’s friends Won’t stand the test of time [Chorus] Fairytale of Ottawa Where the snow hides the schemes They’ll write you exemptions while selling you dreams Fairytale of Ottawa Oh How it shines But behind all the tinsel They’re drawing the lines [Verse 2] The ministers were smiling Their hands upon the pen They whispered about progress But didn’t say when The people on the sidewalks Lit candles in the frost They prayed for a country That wouldn’t count the cost [Prechorus] Oh Bill C-15 You’re dressed in green But your roots run deep with greed A gift they claim for Christmas Day But it’s not what we need [Chorus] Fairytale of Ottawa Where the snow hides the schemes They’ll write you exemptions while selling you dreams Fairytale of Ottawa Oh How it shines But behind all the tinsel They’re drawing the lines
