Back before the twinkly lights and shopping mall cheer We kept the longest night with mead and reindeer Odin rode the wild hunt, eight-legged and bold Thor cracked the sky to keep away the cold We burned a giant yule log, sang to the sun Danced round the oak till the new year begun Then someone slapped a red suit on our solstice feast Called it “Christmas” – well, the joke’s on the priest! Raise your horns, light the log, let the old ways ring Yule be ours again, hear the Vikings sing Deck the halls with boughs of pine and holly green Pagan roots are rising, strong and evergreen Yule be ours, from fjord to sea Solstice fire burning wild and free Hail to the thunder, hail to the frost Yule be ours – the true midwinter boss! Freya brings the mistletoe, Loki spikes the wassail bowl Dwarves forge the presents deep under the knoll Stockings by the hearth for the norns to fill with fate Runes on the cookies – that’s how we celebrate No silent night – we drum and shout and roar Till the sun comes back to warm the shore Santa borrowed our reindeer, our tree, our cheer Time to send the bill with a tankard of beer! Light the bonfire, feast the boar, dance till break of day Old gods smiling down on every song we play From longhouse to village, the message is clear The heart of the season was always right here So keep your red cups, keep your jingle-bell cheer We’ll keep the fire, the mead, and the tale we tell Merry Yule to all, may your nights be bright The Vikings are back – and we brought the light! Raise your horns, light the log, let the old ways ring Yule be ours forever, hear the Northmen sing Solstice joy to every heart and home Yule be ours – welcome back the sun, welcome home! Skål and Merry Yule!
