Today marks Mercury’s inferior conjunction with the Sun. ☿️☀️ [Intro — close, almost spoken] I used to think clarity meant having fewer questions. That was convenient. And, as it turns out, rather optimistic. [Verse 1] Hermes carries messages. Sometimes faithfully. Sometimes not. Thoth writes the sentence down. Nabu gives it weight. Budha enters through a story no one tells quite the same way twice. And Mercury - poor Mercury - keeps changing sides depending on where the light is. Perhaps that should have warned us. [Pre-Chorus] A message is not truth. A word is not the thing. A map can cross a border the traveller never sees. And sometimes what we call understanding is only a very elegant agreement with ourselves. [Chorus] There is another kind of clear. Not the answer. Not the light. Not the sudden perfect sentence that puts everything to right. Another kind of clear comes quietly when certainty gives way. When the mind that tried to name the world becomes the thing it has to name. [Verse 2] Mercurius never liked clean divisions. Spirit. Matter. Poison. Medicine. Male. Female. Above. Below. He had the irritating habit of surviving both sides. I understand why alchemists found him useful. Every good explanation eventually meets something it cannot explain without changing what it means. [Pre-Chorus] Perhaps the messenger does not return with better news. Perhaps he returns with different ears. Perhaps the Sun does not reveal what Mercury was hiding. Perhaps it reveals how much the messenger added on the way. [Chorus] There is another kind of clear. Not the answer. Not the light. Not the sudden perfect sentence that puts everything to right. Another kind of clear comes quietly when certainty gives way. When the mind that tried to name the world becomes the thing it has to name. [Bridge — stripped almost bare] I thought awakening would feel like certainty. Of course I did. That is exactly the sort of thing certainty would tell you. But perhaps the deepest change is smaller. Less impressive. More dangerous. Perhaps one morning you wake and discover that the idea you trusted most has moved half a degree. Nothing collapses. No heavens open. You simply cannot stand where you stood yesterday and call it the same place. [Break — very close] And for once the messenger has no message. He is busy reading himself. [Final Chorus — wider, never louder] There is another kind of clear. It does not promise to be kind. It leaves the world exactly where it was and changes who is looking. Another kind of clear. No revelation. No release. Only the strange and useful doubt that maybe certainty was never peace. So let the messenger disappear. Let him pass too close to light. He is not dying. He is discovering that the instrument of thought can also be examined. And when he rises before the Sun he may not know more. He may simply believe less easily. [Outro — almost whispered] I used to think enlightenment meant: now I understand. Now I suspect it may begin with: perhaps I don’t. And that is not the end of the journey. That is the next one.
