Oh, You Meant the Prince?
[Opening — harp, flute, distant choir] [F, singing softly:] Deep within an ancient tower, Past the thorns and past the gate, Someone brave had faced the darkness And had met a dreadful fate. There I found him, pale and wounded, Hidden where no stars could shine, Still defiant, still courageous— [She notices the sword.] Oh... [Celesta sparkles.] ...my. [Verse 1] He had battled seven goblins, He had challenged something huge, He had stood his ground with honor When a wiser man might scoot. He had saved a dozen villagers, Then tried to save twelve more, Which explains why I discovered him Unconscious on the floor. So I lifted up the fallen Prince, And said, “You're safe with me.” Then something caught the candlelight... [romantic strings] Beside his injured knee. [Pre-Chorus] A silver blade with golden runes, A moonstone in the guard, Perfectly balanced, gorgeous grip— M: Getting rescued is quite hard. F: Shhh. I'm having a moment. [Chorus] Oh, look at that sword! What a beautiful sword! Like a wish upon a star That somebody sharpened! Look at those lines! Look at that shine! Is that ancient elven silver? M: It's mine. F: That's adorable. It's perfectly weighted, Enchantingly plated, And somehow I suddenly know— I crossed every mountain And stormed through this tower... [dreamily] And now I know why I had to go! M: For me? F: ... Sure. [Verse 2] I carried him through secret halls, I phased us through a wall. I caught him when he tried to walk And watched him promptly fall. M: I can manage! F: You're bleeding. M: 'Tis nothing! F: You've been stabbed. M: Merely twice! F: You heroic types are exhausting. But his sword remained beside us, Glittering beneath the moon. And every time I looked at it— [violins swell ridiculously] My heart went— Woodland Choir: Thump-Thuumppp--Thhuuummmmp! F: Exactly! [Pre-Chorus] He told me of his kingdom, Of the crown he'd someday wear. Of his lonely royal childhood— F, distracted: Does the pommel have a bear? M: A lion. F: Oh! Even better! M: Were you listening? F: Almost entirely. [Chorus] Oh, look at that sword! That incredible sword! Every Princess dreams someday Her true love will appear! So noble and bright! A glorious sight! And conveniently already here! [M, hopefully:] You mean me? F: No, the sword. [orchestral sting] F: I mean— You're also nice. You're daring! You're handsome! You're noble and charming! You've cheekbones that sculptors adore! But buddy, that blade Has completely upstaged Whatever this song was about before! [Bridge — M gets the sincere heroic ballad] F: You thought being brave meant standing When you barely stood a chance. You thought heroes never faltered, Never yielded circumstance. But sometimes courage means surviving. Sometimes heroes need a hand. Sometimes strength is letting someone Help you find the strength to stand. You don't have to face each monster Just to prove your heart is true. [M, touched]: Rebecca... F: There's a whole wide world that needs you. And I'm glad I rescued you. [M smiles. Music becomes achingly romantic.] M: Then perhaps when I recover— F: Oh! M: Yes? F: You're awake enough to consent now! M: To...what? F: Can I hold your sword? M: I suppose— [MAGICAL CHIME] F: AAAAAAAAH! [Final Chorus — huge key change] LOOK AT THIS SWORD! I'M HOLDING THE SWORD! Woodland Choir: SHE'S HOLDING THE SWOOOOORD! F: It's even more amazing Than I possibly dreamed! The balance! The grip! The magical script! M: Please don't— F: IT GLOWS WHEN I SWING! M: Yes, that's what I— F: IT GLOWS! I've rescued the Prince! I've broken the curse! I've learned something touching today! That bravery's wonderful, Friendship is powerful— [She starts walking away.] And I'm taking this sword, okay? M: WHAT? [Music stops.] F: Consider it my rescue fee. M: That's the ancestral blade of my kingdom! F: I'll take really good care of it. M: Rebecca! [Finale resumes at double grandeur.] F: So farewell, handsome Prince! May your kingdom adore you! May happiness knock at your door! You thought you'd found love With the girl who came for you— [F raises the sword; it sparkles.] But I found something more! Woodland Choir: THE SWOOOOOOORD! M: MY SWOOOOOOORD! F: OUR SWOOOOOOORD! M: That's not how ownership works! F, disappearing through a portal: BYEEEEEE! [Huge orchestral ending] [Tiny post-credit reprise] M, distant: Rebecca! F: I'm naming her Sparkles. M: HER NAME IS DAWNFIRE! F: Sparkles Dawnfire! [magic chime]
