What Day Is It?
(Emma’s point of view) [Intro] What day is it? They say it’s spring. But I last opened my eyes in a garden where time had no name. [Verse I] A nurse said: “You’re back.” Back from where? I didn’t answer. How could I? I searched the ceiling for constellations I knew only from dreams. David was asleep in the chair. Aged by months I hadn’t lived. And Geneviève— Eight now. But I missed her seventh song. [Verse II – soft strings rising] They said I spoke in dreams. That my heartbeat echoed like a fading song. They said I looked peaceful. But inside— I was everywhere. Carole’s city. The jungle natives. The creativity contest. The child who asked: "Who are you now?" [Chorus] I don’t know what’s real yet. I only know what stayed. David’s hand. Geneviève’s eyes. The question that won’t let go: What truth will you carry back now that you're awake? [Verse III] I asked the nurse: “What day is it?” She smiled too carefully. There’d been a flood in Brazil. A new pope in Rome. An artist I loved had died while I was somewhere else. My sister cried by the window. My mother— I remembered too late that she was gone. [Bridge] There are two kinds of memory. What you hold. And what holds you. There are two kinds of return. The one they can see— And the one that takes years. [Verse IV] David was there too— for a breath, for a glimpse. Richard saw him, walking where no path led. But the garden let him go. It kept me longer. And neither of us could say why. [Final Chorus] I am awake. But I am still arriving. And I won’t pretend to understand what happened to time. But I will not forget the garden that waited. The girl who asked. The silence that remembered me back. [Final Line] What day is it? Maybe… the first one I’ve truly lived.
