Devil’s Door
Swampy, upbeat delta blues with male vocals: raw slide guitar riff, stomping kick and foot taps, rattling tambourine, Verses keep it tight and gritty, room-mic feel; chorus jumps with gang shouts, claps, and a dirtier overdriven guitar, Brief call-and-response guitar lick after each chorus, ending with a held vocal growl and band hit, male vocals, blues
[Verse 1] Boot prints in that red clay road Sweat salt stingin’ in my eyes Every bad choice I ever made Got me here I ain’t surprised [Chorus] Keep knockin’ on the devil’s door I’m gonna answer Bare feet dancin’ on a hot coal floor I’m gonna answer If trouble calls my name once more I’m gonna answer Keep knockin’ on the devil’s door I’m gonna answer [Verse 2] Old church bell swingin’ off-time Preacher say “boy You best turn back” But I got dice burnin’ in my pocket And a smile too crooked to crack [Chorus] [Bridge] Smoke in my lungs Rust on my tongue Heart like a busted screen door You’d think I’d learn But I still burn Walkin’ right up to that porch [Chorus]
