[Intro (Single bass note, funky, with envelope filter. Drums enter—four-on-the-floor kick, tight snare on 2 and 4, hi-hat sixteenths. A guitar plays a single, angular, chopped chord. Spoken word, cool, detached)], [Spoken Word:] "In the late 70s, some punks realized that dancing didn't have to be a surrender. It could be a weapon. The body moving in a world that wants you still. The hips lying to the face of power. So move. Yeah, They're watching— *Move anyway*" [Verse 1 (Full band locks into the groove. Bass is melodic, funky, playing a repeating pattern. Guitar chops staccato chords on the offbeats. Drums are tight, danceable, relentless. Vocals are half-spoken, half-sung, cool and detached):]* The floor is sticky, the lights are low The bouncer at the door doesn't need to know That underneath the polyester and the sweat I'm planning something that hasn't happened yet The DJ spins something with a four-on-the-floor The kids are moving like they're in a war Every step is a statement, every glance is a threat Disco never died, it just learned to sweat [Pre-Chorus (Bass becomes more active, adding ghost notes. Guitar chords become more dissonant. Drums build intensity with fills:]* They said the movement died in '79 They said the white lines stopped the beat, drew the line But movement never dies, it just changes its shape And now we're dancing on the edge of the escape [Chorus (Full power. Bass locked in. Guitar distorted but still choppy. Drums pounding. Vocals shouted, anthemic):]* This is disco-punk, this is the groove The body moving while the system tries to prove That you're nothing, you're no one, you're just along for the ride But the beat says different, the beat says inside This is disco-punk, this is the sweat The revolution hasn't happened yet But it's coming, it's coming, you can feel it in your feet Dancing with dystopia to a funky beat [Verse 2] Gang of Four in Leeds, 1978 Andy Gill's guitar sounding like it hated fate Chopping up the funk with a Marxist's eye Making music that could cut and make you dance and cry ESG in the Bronx, the Scroggins sisters knew That rhythm was the weapon, and the weapon was true Three girls with a drum machine and a bass guitar Proving that the revolution wouldn't travel far Without a beat you could feel in your hips Without a bassline you could bite with your lips Without a dancer who refused to stand still Disco-punk was always about the will [Pre-Chorus] To move when they want you frozen To dance when they want you broken To feel when they want you numb The beat goes on, the beat has won [Chorus] This is disco-punk, this is the groove The body moving while the system tries to prove That you're nothing, you're no one, you're just along for the ride But the beat says different, the beat says inside This is disco-punk, this is the sweat The revolution hasn't happened yet But it's coming, it's coming, you can feel it in your feet Dancing with dystopia to a funky beat [Bridge (Music pulls back to just bass and drums. Bass plays a simplified version of the groove. Drums play kick and hi-hat only. Spoken word, close, intense)], [Spoken Word:] "In 2002, a band called The Rapture released a song called 'House of Jealous Lovers.' It changed everything. Not because it was new—it wasn't new. It was old. It was Gang of Four and ESG and Liquid Liquid all over again. But it was new because the kids had forgotten. The kids had stopped dancing. The kids thought dancing was selling out. And The Rapture reminded them that dancing was always the point. That the body in motion is the body refusing to be controlled. That the beat is older than the state. That the groove will outlast us all." [Bass and drums begin to build again, slowly.]* [Instrumental Section (Breakdown/dance section. Bass plays a new, more complex pattern. Drums add fills every 4 bars. Guitar plays choppy, dissonant chords. Builds for 28 seconds, then)—:] [Verse 3] LCD Soundsystem in 2005 James Murphy singing about being alive "Dance yourself clean" was the command Disco-punk reborn in a promised land Liars in LA, making it weird Dance-punk for the ones who feared That moving meant something they couldn't control Liars said move anyway, lose your soul The Rapture, !!!, The Juan MacLean Every band who knew that the beat was the brain That connects the feet to the heart to the mind Disco-punk was always about the grind [Bridge: Band strips away gradually. Guitar out first. Drums reduce to kick and hi-hat. Bass continues alone for 2 bars, then fades. Single bass note, sustained, with envelope filter, repeating] Spoken Word: "In 1981, a band called Liquid Liquid released a song called 'Cavern.' No lyrics. Just bass, percussion, and a cowbell. It's one of the most punk songs ever recorded. Because punk was never about the guitar. Punk was always about the beat." [Outro: Bass note repeats four times, then fades. Cowbell hits once, alone, then silence], [Spoken Word:] "Class dismissed. Keep moving
