Are Insects Allowed To Cry?
The rain falls softly on a world they never made Tiny legs beneath the leaves, hiding in the shade A million little lives beneath the boots of men Fighting just to breathe the air, then disappearing again Are insects allowed to cry? When no one hears their tiny voices die Are insects allowed to feel the pain? Or are they just forgotten in the rain? A spider waits beneath the stone A beetle crawls the streets alone A moth beats hard against the light Chasing something warm into the night We build our towers, burn our fields Never asking what the smallest creature feels We call them pests, we call them dirt But every living thing can fear the hurt Are insects allowed to cry? Are their lives too small to justify? Are insects allowed to scream? When we destroy the world beneath our feet? Maybe somewhere under fallen trees There are kingdoms hidden in the leaves With tiny kings and soldiers underground Guarding every inch of sacred ground No monuments, no names, no graves Just countless lives beneath the waves Of footsteps, engines, smoke and flame Gone without a witness, gone without a name Are insects allowed to cry? Does anybody care when they die? Are insects allowed to dream? Or is compassion only meant for beings we can see? The ants still march beneath the sun The endless work is never done The bees still search from flower to flower While human hands consume their power And when the final summer fades When silence settles through the fields Perhaps the smallest voices rise And ask us what we thought we knew Are insects allowed to cry? Are insects allowed to mourn? Are insects allowed to live Before their little world is torn? If life is life beneath the sky Then maybe every creature has the right To feel the rain, to hide from pain To wake beneath the morning light Are insects allowed to cry? Yes, somewhere beneath the human noise A thousand tiny hearts are beating And every one of them has a voice
