Call of the Human Voice

[Intro] (hmm-mmm) (hmm-mmm, hmm-mmm) [soft whistle rising then falling] Ba-da ba, ba-da ba, ba-da (oh, listen) [Verse 1] I start with a hum in the kitchen Morning light on the floor, fading dreams You answer back, low little whistle Two small notes and we’re already a team Scat a little line while you’re laughing Pa-pa-da, pa-da, on my name Every sound carries something I can feel it before I can explain [Chorus] This is the call of the human voice Humming through the hurt, through the noise (yeah) It can whisper warm devotion It can shake a sleeping town One breath, one sound, one choice The call of the human voice [Verse 2] When joy comes, it can walk alone Mirth comes as a shout in a crowded room Hands up high, hearts on the table We sing together and the walls make room Love speaks in a softer colour Low and slow, right against your skin Oohs and ahs, tiny tender vowels Every quiet syllable inviting you in [Scat Break] [band drops to a hush] Ba-da dum, ba-da dum, ba-da daaah (hmm-mmm, hmm-mmm) Shoo-bee, doo-bee, yah-yah, ahh [call-and-response scatting builds, then settles] [Chorus] This is the call of the human voice Humming through the hurt, through the noise It can murmur secret promise It can pull the heavens down One breath, one sound, one choice The call of the human voice [Bridge] Sometimes it’s a rally on the corner Hundred throats lifting one same word We rise up, strong as thunder ’Til every hidden hurt is heard Sometimes it cracks in grief Raw and rough in the holy dark A low moan naming what we’ve lost And somehow sharing one broken heart [Scat Break] [band drops to a hush] Ba-da dum, ba-da dum, ba-da daaah (hmm-mmm, hmm-mmm) Shoo-bee, doo-bee, yah-yah, ahh [call-and-response scatting builds, then settles] [Chorus] This is the call of the human voice Humming through the hurt, through the joy It can rally even a stranger Or strike an intimate note Straight from the soul, straight to the heart The call of the human voice [Outro] (hmm-mmm) just a hum in the darkness (ahh) just a sigh in the hall [soft whistle trailing upward] From heart to heart sound finds us all
