Check it out!) (Pfannkuchen!) Check it out!) (Pancakes!) Let highborn bards recite their tales Of fancy fruit omelettes on golden scales. We lower folks, without envy or greed, Praise humble food that we really need: Pancakes and salad, plain and sweet! How sweet young Lizzie bakes this treat, How fine she cooks and sets the stage, Shall now be written on this page. Three fresh-laid eggs, without a flaw, Some milk, a spoon of flour raw, She whisks them fast with nimble hand Into a smooth and perfect blend. Then, though tears may burn her eye, She chops an onion fine and dry, Mixes with oil and salt to make A dressing for the salad’s sake. To finish up the bowl with care, Hot boiled potatoes she must pare. Her fingers move, she blows a puff, To cool her fingertips enough— For only sliced while steaming hot The salad stays right on the spot! Pancakes! And salad! Pancakes! And salad! And now we happily proceed To watch the pancake that we need. The fire stoked, the heat grows high, The pan is wiped and squeaky dry. Diced bacon tossed inside to sizzle, It pops and fries with merry drizzle— Sizzle! Down comes with a splash Our sweet batter-mixture mash! Pancakes! And salad! Pancakes! And salad! Now Lizzie shows her clever mind, A sharper wit you’ll never find! For as we know, all too soon, A pancake burns before the noon! She pokes and prods it, shakes it fast, She lifts and loosens it at last, Until the bottom side is browned, Then flips it neatly, safe and sound! Now up comes what was down below! Just wait a bit, don't rush the show— A second more, and nice and hot, The pancake rests upon the plate! The eating, though, that comes at last, And how it speaks once tongues have passed, Defies all words that could be said— And so the poem ends instead.
