[Verse 1] The world was one, one single sound, Upon the plains of Shinar's ground. One voice, one will, one human name, To build a monument to fame. "Come, let us work with brick and stone, And build a tower to be known. With its own top within the sky, Our name will never fade or die." [Chorus] A tower of one tongue, a single, prideful prayer, To build a stairway through the air. "Let's make a name for ourselves," they cried, With God's command thrown to the side. A tower of one tongue, a fortress strong and tall, So we will never have to fall, So we will never have to be Dispersed and scattered, wild and free. [Verse 2] The Lord came down to see their prize, This human work before His eyes. "Behold," He said, "they are as one, And this is only what's begun. Now nothing that they plan to do Will be impossible or new." A unity in rebel hands, To break My heart and My commands. A whisper first, a foreign phrase, A sudden fog, a verbal haze. The builder turns, his words are strange, His brother's tongue has rearranged. The architect can't understand, The orders given from his hand. The work is stopped, the tools are down, Confusion reigns in that proud town. [Chorus] A tower of one tongue, a single, prideful prayer, To build a stairway through the air. "Let's make a name for ourselves," they cried, With God's command thrown to the side. A tower of one tongue, a fortress strong and tall, So we will never have to fall, So we will never have to be Dispersed and scattered, wild and free. [Outro] And so they left their broken dream, By lonely hill and silent stream. And Babel's name, a scattered sound, On holy, broken, barren ground. The story's done, the chapter's closed, On everything that man proposed.
