[Intro] Epictetus. The Enchiridion. First paragraph: "Some things are within our power, while others are not." That's it. That's the whole philosophy. Everything else is commentary. [Verse 1. The Split] Within one's control: the pen, thought, the next deliberate breath, The response to insult, posturing in the face of death. In effort applied, intention set, words chosen or withheld, Vote cast, meals cooked, apologies courageously compelled. Out of one's control: outcomes, reception, realworld results, other peoples opinions, the algorithm, zeitgeists cults of productivity that measures worth by metrics one can't steer, The weather, the economy, war, world's final frontiers. The dichotomy is simple, the practice is the war, Because the mind conflated the two, ten million times before "Will they like it?", outside. "Did one do one's best?", inside. "Will it recover?", outside. Inside? "Did one stride with pride?" The dichotomy of control: cut with philosophy's curating knife, and hardest one to practise in the dailiness of cultured life. [Hook] Control the pen, release the weather, The dichotomy is simple, holding one's life together. Inside: the effort. Outside: the rains pain. The Stoic lives between, without reaching for the reins of what was never in one's hands, the outcomes and applause, Control the pen, release the torment of nature's cause. [Verse 2. The Doom Scroll] Doom scrolling a failure of dichotomy, deleteriously derived: global crisis, rigged election, lewd ledgers, injustice magnified to pocket-sized device where cortisol attends body's bend the cortex captured, algorithm attends to another thing one can't control: war, floods, rigged votes, Outrage is the product, draw blood, lived sacrificial goat. Epictetus didn't have a phone but the principle adapts: The news is outside. The response is inside. The gap between stimulus and response is where Stoics deliberately live, Not indifferent, selective. Not numb, live deliberative. "Does one's outrage change the outcome?" if yes, act inside one's sphere, If no, the outrage is a tax one pays to feel the veneers steer. Dichotomy applied: vote, donate, volunteer, that's control. Doom-scroll, argue, retweet are dichotomy's told toll. [Hook] Control the pen, release the weather, The dichotomy is simple, holding one's life together. Inside: the effort. Outside: the rains pain. The Stoic lives between, without reaching for the reins of what was never in one's hands, the outcomes and applause, Control the pen, release the torment of nature's cause [Verse 3. The Community] Community's dichotomy: what's inside the neighbourhood's control? The gathering, meals, mutual aid, the shared soul patrol of care for one another, the sphere of influence, lived. What's outside: policy, budget, national narrative sieved through media, through platform, through the algorithm's hand, community doesn't yet control policy but community commands its own response, own governance, own resilience frame, The dichotomy of control at communal scale: the same. Focus inward: the relationships, the skills and local trust, Release outward: things policy will do as policy must. Not passivity to power, strategic investment of energy into spheres where action matters, governance freed. Dichotomy of control defined in organism's efficient design: No ATP spent on reactions organisms can't define or align. Spend it where signal reaches, where action feeds nature's heart, The dichotomy of control: Stoic's deliberative start of repart. [Bridge] The pen sits in one's hand. The weather is not. Write. Let be weather, whether water raindrops drop. That's it. That's the whole philosophy. Life is what one builds between lines, lobotomously set free. [Outro] Dichotomy of control, simplest philosophy alive, Inside the sphere: effort, intention, the strive. Outside the sphere: everything else, released. Control the pen. Release the storm. dichotomy at peace.
