Death Nesting - Hollow Words At The Grave

Don’t read me no scripture, don’t hand me no psalm, That book don’t mean nothin’ when the body is gone. You call it God’s will, but it feels like a theft, And your verses are empty for the ones who are left. The dead don’t need your comfort, the dirt don’t need your song, The grave don’t bend to Heaven, it just drags us along. Quit preachin’ God’s reasons over bones in the ground, Ain’t no wisdom in the thunder, just silence all around. I’ve buried my father, I’ve buried my wife, And each time you whisper, “Thy will be done.” But the will I can feel is the cold of the stone, And your holy words leave me colder, alone. The dead don’t need your comfort, the dirt don’t need your song, The grave don’t bend to Heaven, it just drags us along. Quit preachin’ God’s reasons over bones in the ground, Ain’t no wisdom in the thunder, just silence all around. You talk of a kingdom, a place in the sky, But I see only darkness when I close my eyes. You dress up the anguish in chapters and verse, But grief don’t get softer, it just gets worse. So take back your Bible, take back your prayer, Don’t tell me they’re better, they’re not really there. It ain’t Heaven that holds them, it ain’t God’s command, It’s just earth, it’s just silence, it’s dirt in my hands. The dead don’t need your comfort, the dirt don’t need your song, The grave don’t bend to Heaven, it just drags us along. Quit preachin’ God’s reasons over bones in the ground, There’s no mercy in the silence, just sorrow without sound. No verse can raise ‘em, no prayer can bind, Just the ache in your chest, just the weight in your mind.
