[Intro] mm mm mm (have mercy, Lord) [Verse 1] The elder came by on Sunday Eve, With psalms still fresh upon his tongue, He said he’d guide my brother dear, For faith when he was young. But down behind the chapel walls, I heard a shadow say, “Just trust in me, don’t be afraid— There’ll be no church today.” (no church today.....) [Chorus] “There’ll be no church today, young boy, There’ll be no church today! (no church today!) Just close your eyes and follow me, There’ll be no church today.” [Haunting Fiddle solo] [Verse 2] I watched them near the candle glow, Through cracks along the frame, The elder’s hand on trembling skin, While speaking heaven’s name. [harmonica lick] He called it faith, he called it love, But holy men don’t stray, Still with a groan he whispered low, “There’ll be no church today.” (no church today) [Chorus] “There’ll be no church today, young boy, There’ll be no church today! (no church today!) No psalm, no hymn, no gospel truth, There’ll be no church today.” (mmmmm).... [Electric guitar solo] [Verse 3] [Fewer instruments] Now every hymn is stained with grief, The organ’s notes run cold, For innocence is torn apart, By hands that should uphold. [drum fill] What I have seen, I can’t reveal, But Lord I kneel and pray, To wash the memory from my soul— “There’ll be no church today.” (no church today) [Outro] And Lord I beg, please wash that memory away… [Spoken, broken] There’ll be no church today. .....no, church, today.... [musical ending]
