[Verse 1] I came home from the depot late With carrots and a bag of beans My upstairs neighbor smelled the onions From halfway up the landing She brought a pot she'd bought for five The lid had wandered off somewhere We covered it with one big plate And pulled another kitchen chair [Pre-Chorus] The first taste needed more black pepper She took the shaker from my hand [Chorus] Midnight soup club, come on in Leave that long day where it's been One good pot, a loaf to share Pull up another kitchen chair Let that old plate keep good time Tell me yours and I'll tell you mine Midnight soup club, stay awhile I'll wash up if you dry [Verse 2] The mechanic knocked to get his wrench Which I'd forgotten by the sink He tasted soup and came right back With bread enough for three, I think We talked about the new bus route And which stop saves the longest walk The plate kept rattling on the pot We laughed each time it chimed along [Chorus] Midnight soup club, come on in Leave that long day where it's been One good pot, a loaf to share Pull up another kitchen chair Let that old plate keep good time Tell me yours and I'll tell you mine Midnight soup club, stay awhile I'll wash up if you dry [Instrumental - piano and lap steel, eight bars] [Bridge] Next Tuesday there was celery Outside my door with someone's note It said, I found the proper lid But I liked hearing that old plate [Final Chorus] Midnight soup club, come on in Leave that long day where it's been One good pot, a loaf to share Pull up another kitchen chair Let that old plate keep good time Tell me yours and I'll tell you mine Midnight soup club, stay awhile I'll wash up if you dry [Outro] We saved the lid for carrying leftovers The plate still gets its Tuesday shift.
