There’s Nothing that I Can Do

The bubbles are rising but my body’s still sinking I’m quickly running out of breath Kicking my way up seems hard but pride’s my calling card So I’ll swim deeper, I guess I can’t let them think I am weak won’t admit I might be wrong My opinions are my foundation I’m already too far along I’m in too deep I’m over my head But rather than change my ideas I’ll double down instead When accepting new truths challenges my world view there’s nothing that I can do I’m in my own ditch Mud is pouring in fast but I’ll keep digging down to the higher ground I just have to dig deep enough to prove that I’m tough then I won’t have to see the bigger world around When contradictions keep happenin' it feels like the walls are cavin’ in You say I’m in filthy trouble but nothing can pierce my bubble I’m deep in a hole up to my knees in muck But rather than change my ideas I’ll say it’s you who is stuck When accepting new truths challenges my world view there’s nothing that I can do No, there’s nothing that I can do! I’m high up in a tree where branches are as brittle as twigs and I can’t really see the ground My only chance to advance is to climb further out on a branch rather than take the ladder down I have to be better I have to be right Can’t cede anything to my enemies Can’t back away from a fight I’m far too high and out on a limb But rather than change my ideas I’ll hang reality on a whim When accepting new truths challenges my world view there’s nothing that I can do You might say I should grab that diver’s line You might say I could drop the shovel and climb You might say I should use the ladder you gave me But I don’t want anyone to save me! Whether in too deep or at the bottom of a hole or out on a limb I could never be so bold If accepting new truths challenges my world view there’s nothing that I can do Is there nothing that I can do? No, simply nothing that I can do
