on the lake—湖上/中原中也

Now that the moon has quietly slipped into view, Shall we take the boat out, just we two? The waves will whisper, hita-hita... And perhaps, we’ll feel a touch of breeze. Into the dark, the lake will grow wide, The drips from the oar, our only guide. A sound so familiar, a friend in the night— Filling the hush where the words took flight. The moon will lean with a listening ear, Perhaps it will even drift a little near. And in the moment of our kiss, The moon will be there, watching above. Still you will murmur, on and on, Little sulks and whims, until they are gone. I’ll listen to all, every word you say— Only, keep the oar moving, slow and light. Now that the moon has quietly slipped into view, Shall we take the boat out, just we two? The waves will whisper, hita-hita... And perhaps, we’ll feel a touch of breeze.
