All rights reserved I walked the wood that spring had washed The light came down in coins of green Birds stitched the morning to the boughs And flowers burned between the trees The path ran gold. The canopy Held up a sky of palest blue I put my hand upon the living And felt it beating, slow and true So under the oak tree I lay In the shadow of thought And there I stay I cut the roses from the thorns Red lanterns trembling in my grip The bushes signed their name in me I paid them with the blood I shed I knelt where water left the dark It rang like silver on the stone I drank until my mouth was winter Then summer moved inside the bone The oak stood separate from the spring An older quiet, thick with years Its shade was not the shade of leaves It was the shade that seeing wears I came to it with flowers fading And water shining on my mouth I laid me down as the light lies down When it has nowhere left to climb So under the oak tree I lay In the shadow of thought And there I stay So under the oak tree I lay In the shadow of thought And there I stay
