The Fall of Icarus
i woke in the fall no ocean, no earth just the weightless hum of everything i ruined my hands hung like dead wings strangers to flight but mine all the same your name father, sun, god, sky was a tether of light and i chased it like it could love me back i wanted to be more than your invention more than wax and warning i wanted to matter louder than gravity if i’m still here why does it feel like i died mid-climb weightless worthless a crown made of heat dragged me down just to teach me what i’m not falling falling but slower now so i have time to count what i killed they said it was brave to hold on but i never held anything i let go of fear and called it flight every breath is ash and no one wants to breathe it you never caught me because you weren’t supposed to this wasn’t a tragedy it was a choice weightless worthless a crown made of heat dragged me down just to prove i was never holy falling falling but slower now so i can watch what burned with me i rose because i hated being small i fell because i dared to want more i dream of the sky still because even now i don’t regret it
