Second Wind

Mid-60s Detroit garage punk lineage: teenage bands in echoey basements chasing British invasion swagger with American violence, then the late-60s proto-punk that stripped it meaner — two-chord vamps hammered past the point of reason, treble-heavy fuzz, tempos that rush, A unique and specific vocalist, sneering high tenor timbre pushed to a shredded yelp, more attitude than accuracy, phrases spat ahead of the beat, Guitar through a fuzz pedal into a small cranked amp, riffs monolithic and repetitive, solos that are one note strangled, Drums flat-out primitive: caveman quarter-note stomp, crash cymbal ridden like a threat, fills forbidden, Two-piece density trick — octave-splitting fuzz fattens the low end where a bass would be, Under three minutes, no bridge, count-in left on tape, Garage echo, red-lined levels, glorious mono feel, ‑polished production, ‑quantized timing, ‑clean vocals, ‑ballad tempo, ‑acoustic instruments, ‑complex arrangement, ‑drum fills, ‑wide stereo sheen

[Verse] Set the scene: September air Dirt and blood Split lip and hair Bent knees All they did was stare For years All you did was stare She takes the breath you lost for her He took your coat to keep it warm You took it all 'cause you swore you could You swore you could [Chorus] And there it is again Second wind Your second wind And there it is again Second wind Your second wind [Verse 2] I know It feels just like the end They stand in a line And they all blend in The past is a mess But you can't go back You never thought it would last like that The past is a mess But you can't go back You never thought it would last like that [Chorus] And there it is again Second wind Your second wind And there it is again Second wind Your second wind [Bridge] You only get one heart to break Only one chance One life to make And there it is again [Chorus] Second wind Your second wind And there it is again Second wind Your second wind And there it is again Second wind Your second wind
