[Verse] His ship was a shadow on the wine-dark sea Salt in his beard and a heart unfree He chased the sun but it ran away Night always fell and begged him to stay [Chorus] Oh the pirate and the mermaid What a pair One in the water One in the air She sang him a song He tossed her a stare Oh the pirate and the mermaid Love isn’t fair [Verse 2] She lived in the waves A queen of the deep Dreams of the surface would steal her sleep He brought her a star in a glassy jar She said "What’s the use You can’t cage the stars" [Prechorus] Oh sailor Oh dreamer You’ll never win Her heart is a tide It won’t stay in [Chorus] Oh the pirate and the mermaid What a pair One in the water One in the air She sang him a song He tossed her a stare Oh the pirate and the mermaid Love isn’t fair [Bridge] He built her a boat She sank it for fun She wove him a net He came undone They danced on the shore where the moonlight lay But the dawn would always take her away
