Behind the Glass
[Intro] Two seventeen. Building's empty. Just me... and twenty million gallons on the other side. [Verse 1] Every night I walk the halls beneath the cobalt light. Silver shadows cross the glass, then vanish out of sight. Keys are hanging from my belt, my footsteps softly drown. But lately when I stop to move, the water settles down. Something flickers far below, too straight to be a reef. Windows glowing in the blue, then disappearing underneath. [Pre-Chorus] When I move, the lights move too. When I stop, they wait for me. Something living past the glass knows exactly where I'll be. [Chorus] There's a city behind the glass, I can see it when the building sleeps. Golden windows in the black, somewhere underneath the deep. Every night it moves more near, every light becomes more clear. I thought I was watching them— now they're watching me from there. [Verse 2] Camera seven lost its feed at three-oh-nine last night. When it came back, every fish was facing toward the light. I walked closer to the tank, put my hand against the pane. Far below, a thousand windows lit up one by one again. Then a figure crossed the street where no street should ever be. Stopped beneath a glowing sign... and slowly looked at me. [Bridge] Lights off... No sound... Don't move... Turn around... One knock against the glass. Then two. Then three. But nothing's on my side. [Final Chorus] There's a city behind the glass, I can see it when the building sleeps. Golden windows in the black, somewhere underneath the deep. Every night it moves more near, now the skyline's almost here. I thought I was watching them— now they're waiting for me there. [Outro] Four seventeen. Building's empty. Tank is dark. My keys are on the other side.
