The Walls Remember

I pushed the door and heard it breathe Same broken lock, same crooked key Dust had settled on the floor But I knew every inch once more The hallway seemed a little small Faded outlines on the wall Someone painted over blue Still I swear I saw it through You can cover every trace You can give the rooms new names But underneath another coat Something always stays The walls remember Every word we tried to bury Every midnight, every fight Every shadow crossing light The walls remember Even when we swear we've changed We can leave and lock the door But something stays here evermore There was a mark beside the stairs From moving furniture somewhere A tiny scar nobody knew Except the ones who lived it through I stood where laughter used to rise Almost hearing distant nights Nothing moved and no one spoke Still the silence felt too close Time can soften every edge Turn a memory into haze But put your hand against the stone And suddenly it wakes The walls remember Every word we tried to bury Every midnight, every fight Every shadow crossing light The walls remember Even when we swear we've changed We can leave and lock the door But something stays here evermore New photographs were on the shelf Proof this place belonged elsewhere Different voices filled the rooms Different flowers learned to bloom And for a moment I could see This house had carried on from me I wasn't haunting what remained I was only passing through again Maybe walls remember nothing Maybe stone is only stone Maybe all these ghosts I'm hearing Are the ones I brought back home So I walked through one last time Left each empty room behind Didn't touch the faded frame Didn't need to stake my claim At the doorway I looked back Not for something that I lacked Just to thank the life I knew For becoming something new The walls remember Or at least I thought they did Every midnight, every fight Every shadow crossing light But walls don't hold us They just stand while people change I can finally close the door And leave my echoes here no more The walls remember... But I don't have to.
