Counterbalance

I see the diss game, cheap seats chirpin’ through a rented amplifier, appetite for petty gets fed by the petty supplier, same bait, same plate, same little carnival flyer, sellin’ “say my name” with a surcharge and a service provider, I pass by, palms dry, no dirt under knuckles, no urge in my muscle to scuffle in puddles, they juggle rebuttals, then fumble the subtle, all volume, small cargo, loud truck, weak shuttle. Look, I respect a sharp pen when the purpose got polish, wit with a hinge on it, humor with knowledge, but most of these takedowns read like group-chat college: half rumor, half theatre, half invoice, half hostage. That math ain’t mathin’, that craft ain’t craftin’, that raft ain’t raftin’ when the cheap boards snap in, the page starts laughin’, the margins start askin’, “how many captions till the act quits actin’?” I don’t feed a feud that needs my fork to look catered, don’t lend a quote to a clerk with a cratered calculator, don’t make a mascot outta malice, don’t salute paper sabers, don’t confuse loud behavior with labor. There’s labor in restraint, weight in a measured refusal, grace with a gate on it, pace with a neutral, class ain’t costume, conduct ain’t usual, especially when the room wants the mud made musical. They say “come on, clap back,” I say “cash back where?” Return that purchase, tag intact, bag still square, your provocation got a warranty voided by wear, and the receipt said “fragile,” so I handled with care. See, I can hear the setup creak before the punch gets placed, hear the angle beg attention from the way it gets phrased, hear the edit hide the motive while it polishes rage, then the whole little stage gets small on the page. Miss me with the messy little missile and the petty confetti, I’m steady with a ledger, you’re heavy with a ready-made levy, I keep plenty in the pencil, no need to get sweaty, if the dig needs my temper, then the dig came empty. Miss me with the “say somethin’,” “pay somethin’,” staged-up levy, I stay in my lane with the craft held steady, let the bait sit there till the bait gets buried, then I make better work while the bait gets petty. That’s the difference: They bring comment-combat, I bring counterbalance, calibrated patterns and compound talents, silver-tongue? scratch that, banned little habit, call it plain steel speech with a well-kept mallet. This ain’t pacifist panic, this is practiced selection, a tactical exit with immaculate tension, let the insult swing wide, let it live with rejection, let it learn its own lack of direction. If the dart had merit, it’d travel independent, wouldn’t need my name as a rented extension, wouldn’t need an audience cosigning resentment, wouldn’t need a costume marked “brave” for attendance. I heard somebody say “silence means guilt,” cute trick, sounds like a salesman... with a cracked little yardstick, measure me wrong, get the wrong thing measured, I’m in the workshop, not the window; makin’ better. They want mud on the hem so the photo feels even, want dirt on the hand so the crowd keeps leaning, want “same as me” stamped over clean disagreement, want a shared low bar for convenient reading. I’m allergic to the bargain, adverse to the circus, certain of the service when the verse has purpose, wordwork first, then the nerve sits perfect, and the petty loses oxygen behind the curtain. No pedestal talk, no saint mask either, I got flaws, got heat, got a temper with a meter, but I don’t hand my steering to a heckler in the bleachers, don’t let a bitter little pitch pick my feature. I’d rather cut a clean track, stack syllables in sequence, multi-lane movement with a readable thesis, turn that “he said, she said” stale procedure into “watch how craft makes clutter look needless.” Miss me with the messy little missile and the petty confetti, I’m steady with a ledger, you’re heavy with a ready-made levy, I keep plenty in the pencil, no need to get sweaty, if the dig needs my temper, then the dig came empty. Miss me with the “say somethin’,” “pay somethin’,” staged-up levy, I stay in my lane with the craft held steady, let the bait sit there till the bait gets buried, then I make better work while the bait gets petty. And yeah, I see the players playin’, I can read the formation, same fake provocation in a fresh decoration, same ache dressed brave for a small ovation, same low invitation with a louder narration. I decline with a nod, not a sermon or a slogan, keep the pen capped; the exit wide open, clean shoes, tight laces, line still focused, those that know notice without me promotin’. So let ‘em draft darts, let ‘em bark at the carpet, let ‘em carve my outline into someone else’s target, I’m absent from the bargain, present in the artistry, hard to drag a person who refuses the party. The bar lands like talent, but the heft stays parked, wi'out mud, wi'out herald, wi'out cheap remark, the page says “done” with a dry little mark, and I walk past the pit with the craft still... sharp.
