MERCY 022 – Rescue Before Bargain | The Mercy

(Verse 1) The storm-broke vessel crossed the bar with canvas split and torn, While harbour bells called every watch before the drowning morn. The refugees stood crowded where the shattered railings leaned, And fever breathed below the deck where every bunk was screened. (Verse 2) The harbour guard raised quarantine and closed the inner quay, But Open Water law still bound their hands beside the sea. They launched the rescue cutters through the rain and rising foam, For danger could not cancel what the drowning claimed as home. (Chorus) Rescue before bargain, let the living reach the shore, Then name the fever honestly and seal the harbour door. Can mercy hold the water when the sickness comes inside, Or will the fear of strangers turn the rescuers aside? (Verse 3) The healers met the refugees beneath the outer light, With masks and marked-off shelter beds prepared throughout the night. The captain gave the sickness count and opened every hold, For hidden fever travelled farther than a chest of gold. (Verse 4) The market elders counted grain and argued over cost, While mothers watched the harbour wall and named the friends they lost. To turn the vessel outward meant condemning those aboard, But opening every shelter might become a sharpened sword. (Chorus) Rescue before bargain, let the living reach the shore, Then name the fever honestly and seal the harbour door. Can mercy hold the water when the sickness comes inside, Or will the fear of strangers turn the rescuers aside? (Bridge) The Compact did not promise that compassion carried none, It only bound the harbour to the duty first begun. A rescue was not innocence, nor quarantine a chain, But both became the measure of who answered through the rain. (Outro) So storm lights burn above the quay where guarded mercies stand, And strangers wait in fever tents beyond the inner land. The harbour keeps its covenant while every household fears, For mercy lives where honest risk is carried through the years.
