The Hum-Chapter 11

[calm steady baritone spoken word,] The debrief chamber was quiet. ---The kind of quiet that hummed beneath the skin. Halix stood before the projection array, --hands clasped behind his back, --eyes fixed on the frozen frame: --Dru Baldwin, --one arm raised, --facing the entity. The image flickered slightly, as if the memory itself resisted being held. Commander Ren leaned forward. --“You’re certain she didn’t run?” She didn’t flinch---She turned. --She raised her arm. --Then the signal fractured. he replied Ren exhaled slowly. --“And the entity?” “Vast.---Aware.--It was watching her.” The silence returned.--- Ren tapped her slate, reviewing the scan data-- “Two life signs. --One stationary. --One moving west.-- Then one. --Then none.” Halix didn’t speak. Ren looked up.-- “We’re authorizing a search.-- You’ll lead it.” He nodded once.-- Not as emissary. --As witness. The shuttle descended through a haze of magnetized dust, --its hull groaning against the interference. --The crater came into view--jagged, scorched,-- The wreckage of The Callisto lay like a broken ribcage in the sand. Halix stepped out first. --The air was dry, --metallic. --The silence pressed against his ears. He found the recorder half-buried near the hull. --Played it. Her voice. Calm. --Steady. --Fierce. “I’m going to find water. Or die trying.” He closed his eyes. Then turned west. The entity’s tracks were unmistakable---deep impressions, fused sand, a trail of residual heat that made the scanners stutter.-- The team followed in silence, weapons holstered but ready. They reached the cavern by dusk. ---its entrance framed by black stone etched with geometric gliphs. --The patterns pulsed faintly, as if remembering touch. Inside, the temperature dropped. The walls were glass--not installed, --but forged. --Sand melted by heat and pressure, then cooled into smooth, rippling corridors. --Veins of luminescent mineral ran through the glass, casting soft blue and violet light. No signs of life. No signs of Dru. Just the hum. It started as a vibration beneath their boots. Then a low tone, --rising and falling, --layered and complex. --The team froze. Halix tilted his head, --eyes unfocused. --His neural mesh parsed the frequencies. Not music. Not language. Sonic vibration. A crowd. Excited. Curious. --Not hostile. They were speaking. About the intruders. And the one who had been brought in earlier. Halix stepped forward,-- hand on the wall. --It vibrated faintly beneath his palm. “She’s here,” he whispered.-- “I don’t know how. --But she’s here.” The wall hummed back.
