Containment breach (The Elsewhere)
[Intro] [siren riser, rapid synth pulses] [Verse 1] [spoken male vocals, dry] Sirens blare overhead and boots hit the ground running. Daniel presses himself flat against the wall, pulse roaring in his ears, hoping they don't check this way. Sugar blooms alarm all over his nervous system. [female vocals, melodic] Danny. [spoken male vocals] Daniel swallows hard. I know, I know. Get him back alive. We lose the boy, we lose Subject 22. [Chorus] [heavy synth bass, syncopated drums, staccato synth lead] [Verse 2] [spoken male vocals] The steps hammer down the corridor, thundering past them. How do these people even have jobs? Relief floods Daniel regardless, between that and the sedative still lingering in his bloodstream, his knees nearly give out. Sugar instantly zaps his nervous system with a little jolt of focus, and Daniel gives Sugar the psychological equivalent of a slap on the fingers. It chitters in surprise. Dude, stop, my brain's fried enough as it is already. [Chorus] [female vocals, melodic] Stay awake then. The fence past gate 12 Is, well... "High" is an understatement. Danny says he doesn't know how to climb— [spoken male vocals] Sugar stares despite the lack of eyes. "But you're a primate?" "Sugar, I've never climbed a thing in my life." Images flood his mind, late-night documentaries. Information: "... The chimpanzee scales the enclosure with surprising ease. " And suddenly he's up the fence looking down at the ground, laughing in disbelief. "Now what?" [female vocals, melodic] Oh I know! Cat - climb, dear - pet, graceful - land on your feet. [spoken male vocals] The result concludes Daniel is not a graceful four-legged earthling indeed. The ankle goes hard white-hot pain, blinding. "Oopsie." "Sugar!" [spoken male vocals] And the worst part? The ship is right there. Right. Fucking. There. It almost looks holy. Light comes down from the sky over it like a halo. Daniel is about 90% sure Sugar's doing it. "Okay, whatever it takes. Help me get there." [spoken male vocals] There's the sound of boots closing in behind them. The retrieval team. "Danny!" "Whatever it takes, Sugar, please..." [spoken male vocals] There's a moment of hesitation, then Sugar slams him full of adrenaline. And suddenly Daniel Mooney, who's never thrown a punch in his life, is breaking knuckles on military jaws. But the guards keep coming and they don't stop coming. Sugar starts humming the theme to a movie, bopping its imaginary head. "Sugar!" Daniel says, panic rising in his voice. Then the sound of the alarm changes shape. [oscillating alarm] [female vocals, chanting, rhythmic] Danny stay on your feet, Danny stay on your feet, Danny stay on your feet, Danny— [spoken male vocals] "Oh my god, I got it." [music cuts to filtered pads] Then Sugar leaves his system altogether and Daniel absolutely does not stay on his feet. His body drops like a ragdoll. "Sugar?" Around him everybody has stopped. They look... unwell. One of them is looking at his hands, counting them like there's fifteen of them. Another is talking to thin air. Another is crying. Sugar pops back into his mind for a split second. "Go." His nervous system lights up like fireworks and he moves before Sugar pops back out again. Nails in dirt, crawling. And somehow, Daniel "lacks motivation" Mooney drags himself aboard the ship.
