FRANK 017 – The Hovel Beside the Cottage | Frankenstein

(Verse 1) He found a ruined shelter beside a cottage wall, And hid within its darkness where no one saw at all. Through one small broken window he watched the household near, And learned their daily sorrow while keeping from their fear. (Verse 2) He saw their meagre supper, their weariness and care, And wondered why such kindness should live beside despair. He watched them gather firewood beneath the winter sky, Then stole into the forest when darkness gathered nigh. (Chorus) He lived beside their cottage, unseen from human sight, And carried wood in silence beneath the cover of night. No thanks could ever reach him, no kindly word was said, Yet happiness awakened whenever they were fed. (Verse 3) Before the family wakened, the timber would appear, A secret gift delivered when morning light drew near. He stopped from taking portions that once relieved his need, For seeing all their hunger had changed his heart from greed. (Verse 4) He studied every gesture and watched their faces glow, While meanings formed within him from everything they showed. Their tenderness enchanted the stranger hidden there, And slowly taught the outcast how deeply hearts could care. (Chorus) He lived beside their cottage, unseen from human sight, And carried wood in silence beneath the cover of night. No thanks could ever reach him, no kindly word was said, Yet happiness awakened whenever they were fed. (Bridge) They never knew the giant who laboured while they slept, Or saw the silent vigil beside their home he kept. He asked for no reward there, no praise for what he gave, Only to ease the burdens of those he longed to save. (Outro) Within his narrow hovel he watched their candles gleam, And human love awakened the first enduring dream. He dared to hope their kindness might someday reach him too, While hidden by the cottage, his gentler nature grew.
