I been talkin’ to my heart but it don’t listen anymore it just beats out of habit like it forgot what for used to pump love now it pumps defense it builds walls and calls that sense I used to write in red now I write in rust every word I bleed turns love to dust the heart’s a liar that speaks in tears it whispers forever then disappears mine’s cracked in chords that no one hears it hums in silence through all my fears they say follow your heart but mine walks blind it trips on pain it hides behind time I gave it away to someone careless they dropped it once and called it fearless I picked it up but it didn’t fit right so I kept it broken to remind me of night love ain’t soft it’s sharp and kind it cuts you deep to make you shine I wore my heart like a badge and chain I called it pride but it was pain I prayed for warmth but learned instead the same hands that heal can turn you red I ain’t cold I’m just done pretendin’ I ain’t bitter I’m just done defendin’ every “I love you” felt like rent and I paid with pieces I can’t get spent I keep my chest locked like a room with ghosts where every heartbeat echoes most the sound of faith the feel of break the way you love when it’s all at stake the heart don’t ask it just gives even when it knows it won’t live I told it stop but it still tried I told it heal but it just cried I told it forget it just replayed every name that walked away the heart’s a rebel that won’t obey it still loves the ones that stray and maybe that’s its truest grace to still have warmth in the coldest place sometimes I think it beats outta spite like it wants to prove it still got fight and I respect that even when I break ’cause the heart don’t quit it just reshapes it learns to burn without smoke it learns to heal without hope and every scar becomes a song a rhythm sayin’ “you still belong” I ain’t heartless I’m heart-worn thin but there’s beauty in the shape I’m in ’cause love ain’t safe but it’s still real it’s the one thing pain can’t fully steal so I wear my chest like an open art this ain’t goodbye it’s just— heart
