[Verse 1] You left the little clock beside the door Its painted birds still circle like before I wind it when the winter evenings fall And count the small bright notes against the wall [Pre-Chorus] I thought the quiet meant the end But every turn brings you again [Chorus] So let the old room open wide Let every locked-up window turn to sky I’ll keep the tune you left with me And carry it beyond these walls, beyond the sea [Verse 2] The blue cup waits upon the kitchen shelf I catch your laugh in things I do myself The house has learned to hold the afternoon While dust moves slowly through the empty room [Pre-Chorus] I thought the quiet meant the end But every turn brings you again [Chorus] So let the old room open wide Let every locked-up window turn to sky I’ll keep the tune you left with me And carry it beyond these walls, beyond the sea [Bridge] When the hands stop, when the gears go still I’ll know your kindness by the shape it fills No borrowed hour can take that part away It keeps its time inside me every day [Final Chorus] So let the old room open wide Let every locked-up window turn to sky I’ll keep the tune you left with me And carry it beyond these walls, beyond the sea I’ll keep the tune you left with me A small bright promise turning endlessly [Outro] The little birds go round The little birds go round
