In time, the violins begin to play, and the music takes on the resonance of life. Yet if even a single enzyme is missing, or if the genes or metabolic pathways are incomplete, the cell cannot proliferate. It will vanish into extinction, never spreading across the world. Selection by the natural environment gives direction to evolution and hastens its progress. Through mutation and elimination, countless forms of life emerged one after another, only to disappear again. This chemical evolution advanced under the power of nature itself, continuing on in the absence of any creator or designer. 05 分子の音楽／突然変異と累積淘汰 やがてヴァイオリンが鳴り出し、音楽は生命らしい響きを帯びる。 しかし、たった一つ酵素が欠けていたり、遺伝子や代謝回路が不完全であれば、細胞は増殖できず、絶滅してしまい、世界に広がることはない。 自然環境による選択は進化に方向性を与え、その歩みを加速させる。 突然変異と淘汰によって、さまざまな生命が次々と生まれては消えていった。 この化学進化は、創造主（デザイナー）の不在のまま、自然の力によって進み続けたのである。
