[Intro] [Verse 1] You rang while I was eating. "I've had a rotten week. The script is written out for you. You only have to speak. Martin's on the breakfast show. His slot comes after mine." "I'll have to get to work." "Of course. That's fine." You showed me how to fade it. You turned the headphones down. You waited for "Good evening." I heard you going out. [Refrain] Thank you for staying. It's good to have you here. We've got you on the line now. We hear you loud and clear. [Verse 2] I read the weather forecast. I tried you at your flat. I closed my mouth to swallow. My voice said, "Welcome back." I tried to ask for help on air. I read the football scores. I tried to say I couldn't stay. I thanked them for their calls. I reached the studio door. The record finished playing. My hands were on the desk again. My mouth was saying— [Refrain] Thank you for staying. It's good to have you here. We've got you on the line now. We hear you loud and clear. [Middle Eight] You rang me back at midday. You'd slept until quite late. "Are you coming back for me?" "I'd hoped that it could wait." "The woman I relieved went home. I rang her every night." "But you could come back for me." "I know. You're right." [Verse 3] At dusk I rang my brother. I let it ring, then stopped. The second time, he answered. "How long's the shift?" "Could you come down for me?" "What for? You need a lift?" "You should have said." "I've had a rotten week. The script is written out for you. You only have to speak." I lowered the chair for him. "Can I just try a line?" I turned the headphones down. "Of course. That's fine." He started with "Good evening." I walked across the floor. The record ended. I was still Outside the studio door. [Refrain] Thank you for staying. It's good to have you here. We've got you on the line now. We hear you loud and clear. [Outro] He got the station wrong. I helped him get it right. "You'll come and get me?" "Of course. Goodnight."
