At the bar only two stools away i smelled her perfume, she blew smoke rings my way the barmaid poured me drinks from the tap no eye‑to‑eye contact, no words, no rap jukebox plays music, variety of songs conversations flowing to and from my eyes fixed forward, no left, no right smoke rings keep passing across my line of sight perfume is stale now, or is my beer flat as she laid her hand on my lap whispering sweet nothings into my ear tonight's the night, it's time to shift gear we sat at the bar exchanging meaningless words sipping our beers, getting quietly drunk the jukebox is playing Are You Lonesome Tonight that's when our smoke rings collided in flight our beers near empty, our words running light smoke rings drifting slow, falling out of flight the jukebox quiet now, no left, no right as i walked out lonesome into the night Andy.B 25.06.2003
