[Verse 1] You found a fig split open on the sill A green beetle working with patient will Dust on its back, one bright copper wing You watched it disappear into the sweet thing [Chorus] Figeater, small guest at the table Take what you need while the fruit is able Figeater, quick little thief Leave me a seed and a story to keep [Verse 2] The bowl was chipped where the blue paint ran You set it outside on an old tin pan By morning, the peel and the crumbs were gone A tiny dark footprint crossed the lawn [Chorus] Figeater, small guest at the table Take what you need while the fruit is able Figeater, quick little thief Leave me a seed and a story to keep [Bridge] No lock, no latch, no grand goodbye Just one folded leaf and a clear blue sky You came for the sugar, you left me the stem I think of that little visitor again [Final Chorus] Figeater, small guest at the table Take what you need while the fruit is able Figeater, quick little thief Leave me a seed and a story to keep [Outro] A seed in the dirt by the kitchen door A new green hook where there was none before
