[Verse 1] There was an airport here many years ago Then the houses crowded in row by row Runways in the dust old signs in the field You could hear the engines you could feel it in the still [Pre-Chorus] Dangerous, too noisy that’s what they would say They came in after sunset then they wanted change Didn't care that first the fields were split by flame They wanted quiet from the place that gave the town its name [Chorus] Airport was first airport was first (airport was first) You moved in close then asked me to leave Airport was first airport was first (airport was first) Now it's gone for good and you won't believe [Verse 2] A plane flew over my house just once in a while Didn't matter to anybody who smiled that mile But the porches filled up fast with complaints and blame Now the map is blank and nobody says its name [Pre-Chorus] Dangerous, too noisy they kept saying more Till the fences came down and the field got sold Now the kids don't know what the hangar used to hold Just a strip of memory under gravel and road [Chorus] Airport was first airport was first (airport was first) You moved in close then asked me to leave Airport was first airport was first (airport was first) Now it's gone for good and you won't believe [Bridge] I can still hear mornings rolling through the trees Wheels on cracked cement and the whistle in the breeze You don't get a second chance when the land is signed away First they want the quiet then they take the place [Final Chorus] Airport was first airport was first (airport was first) You moved in close then asked me to leave Airport was first airport was first (airport was first) Now it's gone for good and you won't believe
