[Intro] The screen door sticks when I come home Boots on the mat, dust on my jeans Mama said, “Boy, you been gone too long” I just nodded, looking at the seams [Verse 1] I cut a trail through county fields With a borrowed truck and a tank half full Every town I passed had a different lie And I kept on running from the pull From a barroom prayer to a roadside nap From a bad call down by the state line Every busted plan, every bent-out oath Left a little smoke on the pines [Pre-chorus] The devil knows my name Knows every door I left in flames He don't need horns, he don't need chains The devil knows my name [Instrumental break] [Chorus] The devil knows my name Knows every door I left in flames He don’t need horns, he don’t need chains The devil knows my name He’s got it tucked in his jacket lining Like a matchbook from a way-off town I hear him laughing in the gravel Every time I try to settle down [Verse 2] There’s a church off Route 14 Where the parking lot still holds my track I used to sit in the last pew Just long enough to look and back Pastor said, “Son, the road cuts deep” And I laughed like I had somewhere to be But I still know the shape of that front door And the way it swung goodbye to me [Chorus] The devil knows my name Knows every door I left in flames He don’t need horns, he don’t need chains The devil knows my name He’s got it tucked in his jacket lining Like a matchbook from a way-off town I hear him laughing in the gravel Every time I try to settle down [Bridge] Maybe I’m not proud of the wreckage Maybe I’m tired of being chased I’ve burned enough to warm the coldest hands And still got soot across my face So if I turn toward home tonight And the porch light’s still burning low I’ll walk in slow, bare hands, no bragging Let whatever’s left of me show [Final Chorus] The devil knows my name Knows every door I left in flames He don’t need horns, he don’t need chains The devil knows my name But this old road can keep its calling I’m done feeding the heat it makes I’ve been a hard man to outrun And I’m learning how to stay [Outro] The devil knows my name [Outro] The devil knows my name [Fade out] [End]
